SECURITY ARCHITECTURE

Designed with care, even where you can't see it.

A low-cost service is no excuse to be careless with stored data. We apply the ideas behind MPC and secret sharing — also used in blockchain — to how mail encryption keys are designed.

AES-256-GCM

Mail is stored encrypted

Body, subject and sender are encrypted with a per-address key. Nothing is stored as plain text in the database.

The full key is never held as-is

The encryption key is split into four shares with Shamir secret sharing; two are needed to reconstruct it. The assembled key itself is not stored in the database.

Honest about the current setup

Key shares are currently managed by role within the database. This is not full external separation, but it avoids plain-text storage and is built to extend to separated storage later.
